College of Business & Economics
The Department of Finance at Towson University teaches the analytical skills and financial modeling necessary to be successful in the business world. Striving for academic excellence, we cultivate a forward-thinking environment for students to grow professionally and encourage students to think about the social and economic welfare of the community, with an emphasis on ethical behavior.
We offer state-of-the-art resources and technology including the T. Rowe Price Finance Laboratory, which simulates a trading room environment complete with a financial and market data stream (Bloomberg) to allow students to track stocks and bonds, and value complex securities in real time. Many courses are taught in this lab to provide students the right environment to grasp the complexity of financial markets.
Our department has a terrific mix of faculty members with experience and enthusiasm for both teaching and research. Our research is practical and directly feeds back into the classroom to enhance students’ learning.
Our continuous assessment and review process has led to significant changes in the curriculum. Students who want to major in business administration with an emphasis in finance have three choices:
The finance program for the business administration major has been accepted into the Certified Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute University Recognition Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70 percent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge. The investments track positions students to sit for the first level of exams to become a Chartered Financial Analyst. One of our faculty members,Yingying Shao, Ph.D., is a CFA charter holder and is an important resource for students interested in pursuing this path. The track in financial planning is designed to help students prepare to sit for the exam to become a Certified Financial Planner.
We encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities offered through the department’s student organizations. The Towson University Investment Group manages an investment portfolio on behalf of the Towson University Foundation. The Financial Management Association Towson Chapter provides professional development opportunities and growth with a large network of students and professionals.
Students also have opportunities to compete in local, regional and national competitions. In spring 2015, five of our recent graduates won a local competition in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Investment Research Challenge under the able guidance of Jian Huang, Ph.D.
Our department offers various scholarships for academic excellence and leadership. We emphasize a close working relationship with professionals in the industry and believe in training students to be top-notch professionals through internships.
We work with the Baltimore Certified Financial Analyst Society (CFA) to publish the Baltimore Business Review. In this applied business journal, we showcase our faculty's cutting-edge research along with that of professionals in the field.
